GWO Crane & Hoist and Service Lift are now available for technicians in Romania

RenewAcad is expanding its portfolio of workplace safety courses in the wind energy sector through the new GWO accreditations.

Constanta, October 31, 2025 – RenewAcad announces that it has obtained GWO accreditations for the Crane & Hoist and Service Lift courses, training programs aimed at technical personnel who operate and carry out interventions in wind turbines. These new authorizations allow the delivery of training programs in line with the international standards applicable to the wind industry, both onshore and offshore.

These programs target activities with a direct impact on the operational safety of a wind turbine: handling components and loads at height, using internal lifting systems, accessing and moving inside the tower, and performing maintenance work in technical areas with limited access.

“Romania has to install over 3,000 MW of wind energy in the coming years. We estimate that around 500 new wind turbines will be installed and commissioned by 2030. These have massive components and it is very important that everyone working on site is additionally trained in order to ensure a safe working environment. The lifts inside wind turbines are not like standard ones. They are used to transport tools, equipment, but also people. Sometimes they can break down or get stuck, just like any other lift, and those who use them must know how to intervene on the spot, how to operate them correctly and how to safely lift the tools they use without causing accidents. The service crane of the wind turbine is an important component through which field technicians hoist up into the nacelle vital components in order to keep the turbine in operation on a permanent basis. Every piece of equipment in wind turbines is thoroughly inspected, ensuring the highest possible availability in the operation of the installations”, said Giorgiana Alexe, Director of the RenewAcad Training Center.

The GWO Crane and Hoist programs aim to train technicians who use fixed small-size cranes and hoists for basic lifting operations in the wind turbine environment. The training content is designed to ensure the compliant use of this equipment, in line with the technical limits set by the manufacturer and with legal safety requirements.

The Crane and Hoist Inspection and Maintenance module is designed for technicians responsible for inspecting, maintaining, and testing fixed cranes and fixed hoists. This module covers assessing the condition of the equipment according to current legislation and manufacturers’ manuals, identifying nonconformities early, and correctly applying preventive maintenance measures.

The Crane and Hoist User Basic module prepares technical personnel to safely operate this lifting equipment during low-complexity lifting activities. Participants are trained to carry out these maneuvers in strict accordance with applicable procedures and technical documentation, so that equipment integrity and team safety are protected.

Furthermore, RenewAcad is also accredited for the GWO Service Lift programs, which cover the use and maintenance of service lifts installed inside the wind turbine tower. These pieces of equipment are essential for moving personnel and for transporting tools and equipment during intervention and maintenance activities.

The Service Lift User module is intended to train participants in the correct and safe use of the service lift inside the wind turbine. The course covers the main types of guidance systems and lift systems used in turbines, mandatory pre-use checks, rules for moving within the lift, and response procedures in case of blockage or emergency. The focus is on the systematic use of the manufacturer’s instructions and manuals.

The Service Lift Inspection and Maintenance module is designed to train technicians involved in checking the condition of the lift after installation, commissioning it, identifying any defects, and carrying out basic adjustments or component replacements. This module supports a structured approach to interventions, with full traceability and compliance with the technical documentation.

“Training according to these standards contributes to increasing the level of safety and professionalism in access, handling, and maintenance activities in wind turbines. Through these programs, we ensure that technicians consistently understand and apply operational and safety requirements”, said the Director of the RenewAcad Training Center.

By obtaining accreditation for the GWO Crane & Hoist and GWO Service Lift trainings, RenewAcad strengthens its role as an internationally recognized training center for the wind industry and supports the qualification of technical personnel for high-risk operations.
