Press Release – Monsson launches Eskilstuna Power Reserve, its first energy storage project in Sweden, with 30 MW of power and 60 MWh of storage capacity

Eskilstuna, 27 October 2026 – Monsson announces the launch of Eskilstuna Power Reserve, its first investment in a battery energy storage facility in Sweden. The project includes a battery energy storage system (BESS) with a capacity of 60 MWh and a power rating of 30 MW, designed for a two-hour discharge duration. Commissioning activities began in September 2026, with commercial operation scheduled for November 2026.
Eskilstuna Power Reserve is designed to provide flexibility in power system operation and contribute to grid stability in Sweden’s SE3 bidding zone. The system can switch between charging and discharging in less than three seconds, enabling a rapid response to variations in electricity generation and consumption. The project uses Monsson’s proprietary technology and reflects the company’s experience in developing, engineering and deploying utility-scale energy storage facilities. Its implementation marks the expansion of Monsson’s presence in the Nordic market and the growth of its energy storage activities.
“Eskilstuna Power Reserve represents an important step in Monsson’s expansion into the Nordic market. Through this 30 MW / 60 MWh project, we are bringing our energy storage technology and expertise to Sweden, with the aim of contributing to grid flexibility and stability. Commissioning activities are finished, and commercial operation is scheduled for November 2026. Our team in Sweden, together with our colleagues in Romania, is ready to provide these flexibility services both locally and across Europe,” said Sebastian Enache, Head of Strategy & M&A at Monsson.
At the launch event on 22 October, held in Eskilstuna under the theme “Storing Energy, Powering Generations”, the attendees included representatives of Sweden’s energy industry, grid operators, authorities and the business community. The programme featured presentations on the project’s technology and business model, discussions with the Monsson team and guided tours of the facility ahead of commercial operation.
“By developing Eskilstuna Power Reserve, Monsson is expanding its portfolio of storage solutions designed to support energy systems with a growing share of renewable generation in Europe. The project provides a foundation for the company’s continued development in the Nordic region, where flexibility and efficient energy management are important components of energy infrastructure,” said Joanna Lillequist, CEO of Monsson Energy AB.
Daniel Ioniță, Ambassador of Romania to Sweden, said: “This facility is Romanian expertise at work in Sweden: designed, built and operated by Romanian professionals, with technology developed at home and applied here. With over 95% of its components manufactured in EU member states, it is also a good example of how European strategic autonomy is built in practice. It strengthens Sweden’s energy transition and the security of the regional power system, and it shows that Romania is competitive on the European energy market.”
“Eskilstuna has long been a city with an ambitious energy agenda, with goals to become truly fossil-free and climate positive by 2045. This important investment provides a new capability for Eskilstuna and Strängnäs. Batteries can provide multiple benefits for the national and local grid, and we see this as the beginning of a long-term partnership. At ESEM, we are eager to innovate together to realise the potential, for example through our new local flexibility market. We are excited and glad that a project of this kind has found its place here,” said Daniel Lindekrans Henriksson, Energy Strategist, Eskilstuna Municipality.
